If you have decided to lose weight, you might feel overwhelmed by the process. How do you get started? How do you stay motivated? What if you fail? Is it worth it? I can answer that last question first – yes! It is worth it! It will be difficult and you will make mistakes, but losing weight and getting healthy is the best decision you can make for yourself and your loved ones. Here are five ways to get started on your weight loss journey.

1. Find Your Motivation

There is usually a reason you want to lose weight. Are you pre-diabetic? Do you have high blood pressure? Are you out of shape? Those are great reasons to get started. Think about the people in your life. If you are married or have children, you may want to get healthy so you can stay around and be active throughout their lives. Remember that exercising and eating healthy is to save your life as well as others. If someone is dependent on you, then you can use that as motivation whenever things get hard.

2. Expect Failures

We all fail. We all want to quit. The same struggles you deal with on your weight loss journey, I dealt with too. I gained back 50 pounds two times. I also gained back 20 pounds several times. I wanted to quit many, many times on my weight loss journey. However, I was able to learn more from my failures than my successes. Every time I failed, I was able to find a new lesson as I climbed my way back out of the hole I dug for myself.

3. Become Resilient

Pick yourself up every single time you fall. Since you are prepared to fail, you will not be surprised when it happens. Do not beat yourself up about it. Acknowledge that you got off track and then get back on track! Resiliency will eventually become more important than your motivation. The most important things to remember is this: never give up. It really is that simple. No matter how hard it is, keep going. You can do this!

4. Master Basic Exercises

As you begin exercising regularly, there are some basic exercise movements you need to master. These exercises are:

  • Bench Press
  • Squats
  • Deadlifts
  • Bicep Curl and Shoulder Press (compound movement)
  • Military Press
  • Walking Lunges
  • Pushups
  • Pull-ups (start with assistance on these)
  • Planks

Work on these exercises often. Do different rep ranges with different weights. Do these so much that you could do them in your sleep. As you practice these movements, add in a mixture of cardio exercises throughout the week and you will be well on your way to losing weight.

5. Find Your Superfoods

Superfoods are the key to mastering your diet. These are nutrient-rich foods considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being. You can google them or check out this post where I talked about macros and superfoods. 75% of my diet contains superfoods. These will keep you full, fuel your body for workouts, and help you lose weight easily. It does not matter how much exercise you do if your diet is not on point. Do not neglect your superfoods!

Remember your initial motivation and get back at it. Everyone fails and makes mistakes. You are only human. Get back in the gym, make a healthy meal and take it one day at a time. You got this!
